“Oh the joys of having a great title and lots of responsibility” said no one. Interestingly, from the outside looking in, that’s what leadership is. Oftentimes we are sold on the “glory” of positions without knowing the whole “story” of positions. Every level of leadership is unique and every leader will approach his/her responsibilities differently. In the ever changing conclave of leaders, the theme that remains constant is this: Leadership REQUIRES one to be challenged.

Have you considered the costs of leadership? I’m not speaking of positions in general but rather the essence of leadership itself. Note: Leadership isn’t confined to a title. Real leadership is simply the ability to influence people towards a common goal. That influence has a price! It costs your time, your mental health, your emotions, your patience etc; All will face the fire IF you desire to be an effective leader. The key? Balance and management of emotions. Yes, emotions.

Too often leaders are challenged by work and the results appear in the home. It’s important to understand that you CANNOT take work challenges personal. You CANNOT take work challenges personal. YOU CANNOT TAKE WORK CHALLENGES PERSONAL! Insubordination, mishaps, deadlines, budget challenges, staffing issues, complaints, customers etc. We deal with a gumbo pot of madness on a daily basis. The good news is, with the proper balance, one can enjoy the gumbo!

Fellow leader, I’m challenging you to first make a personal observation and identify where to draw the line of work frustration.  I drew mine at my office door. Work challenges and my frustration of such stays at work. If it enters your car, its coming home with you. They should be classified as unwelcomed guests. You’re stronger than the work opposition you face. It’s time you believe it ! Control leadership emotions or leadership emotions will control you.
